Chapter 26

Somehow the news of being an aunt for the third time brightened Dani’s day. She forgot about her tiredness and managed to not obsess about when – not if – she’d call Jackson. She let her mind play through the upcoming months, preparing for a baby. She wanted kids, eventually, but for now she was more than happy to have pseudo children through Cheryl. Best of both worlds. Babies to snuggle, toddlers to play with, older kids to take to see animated movies, but at the end of the day she got to return the kids and do whatever she wanted.

‘It’s good practice,’ she said to herself as she made notes of things she wanted to do for Cheryl and her family in the coming months.

They had a quiet lunch in Dani’s office, Dani eating her simple meal and Cheryl eating just crackers and drinking ginger ale. When she finally broached the topic of class, their time was almost up. Dani was grateful for that.

‘So, I’ve been all wah-wah-wah, I’m preggers. What’s up with you? Is there a new dude in your life? Is it the wolf?’

‘The silver fox. And he seems a bit …’ Dani cocked her head, trying to find the right words.

‘A bit what?’

‘Commanding,’ Dani said, finally.

‘Ooooh.’ Cheryl perked right up. ‘You got yourself a Dom?’

‘A Dom? I don’t know if I’d call him a Dom.’ Dani shook her head and popped a cube of cheese in her mouth.

‘Tell me.’ Cheryl twirled her fingers. ‘Throw the nauseous woman a bone.’

Dani told her the story. Him finding her dancing, him waiting there like a Beefeater while Chris had his little mini temper tantrum, him following her out to the car. The things he said.

Cheryl clapped her hands, raised them above her head and crowed, ‘Hallelujah! She got herself a Dom.’

Dani flustered. ‘I don’t know if he’s a—’

Cheryl levelled a finger at her and grinned. ‘Dom,’ she said, bluntly. ‘My God, this is going to be fun. You better tell me everything. Every little dirty detail. Every single filthy act. Every—’

‘Jesus, stop!’ Dani said, semi-horrified, but also oddly excited by her friend’s excitement.

‘I’m just saying. I want details. I want the whole story. None of this coy bullshit. I need an escape. I’m about to turn into the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. I’m going to be huge and cranky and have to pee every four seconds. So when he ties you to a bed and makes you have an out-of-body experience, I get to know.’

Dani was saved by the bell. Or more like the buzz. Her phone came to life and Rebecca informed them that the twelve o’clock appointment had arrived and Cheryl was needed.

Cheryl left, grumbling. Just as Dani was about to look at Jackson’s number on her phone again and wonder if she should dial, her friend stuck her head back in like some deranged puppet and chirped, ‘Details!’

‘Go!’ Dani growled and threw a candy at Cheryl.

Cheryl stooped to pick it up. ‘Thanks, babe.’

There went her calm and unrattled mindset.
